The villages in El Hierro

Valverde - Frontera - El Pinar

The population of El Hierro (about 6 000 inhabitants) is distributed among many entities of unequal size, among which the municipal capitals stand out for their greater number of inhabitants and their grouped population.

El Hierro is the westernmost and southernmost of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean. It belongs to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its capital is Valverde, where, apart from La Villa (town centre), you can also find the port of La Estaca and the insular airport. Besides Valverde, El Hierro has two other municipalities: Frontera and El Pinar. El Hierro has a population of 10,679 in 2017? and is the seventh island of the Canary Islands in terms of population, is the least populated of the archipelago. It is the seventh largest island of the Canary Islands and the smallest of the seven largest islands with 268.71 km².

On the 22th of January 2000 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. A plan is currently being developed by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism to make it the first island in the world to be fully supplied with renewable energy.? On June 27, 2014, the Gorona del Viento hydroelectric power plant was put into operation, with which it aims to achieve this objective,? though that statement is contested by some." In 2014, the entire island was declared a Unesco geopark.
